Busch, Gordon, others shine at Sprint Cup banquet

Kyle Busch, the 2015 Sprint Cup Series champion in remarkable fashion, was far from the only driver highlighted at Friday night's Sprint Cup Series Awards Banquet in Las Vegas hosted by Drew Carey. The ceremony featured spots from all 16 Chase drivers, whose speeches were all longer the higher they placed in the final season standings. Retired four-time champion Jeff Gordon delivered an emotional yet enthusiastic speech in front of the crowd and surprise guest Tom Cruise. For the 13th straight year, Dale Earnhardt Jr. came away with the Most Popular Driver award. The annual In Memorial segment included a special dedication to Steve Byrnes, who died of cancer in April. Each Chase driver was provided with a gift basket before the ceremony consisting mainly of candy and snacks. Some drivers including Busch engaged in an after-party following the awards. The ceremony was considered another successful one based on the reactions of fans and drivers.

Kyle Busch, 2015 Sprint Cup Series Champion

Kyle Busch, in his eleventh full season, completed his comeback from his Daytona injury in a big way by winning Sunday's Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in south Florida, thus claiming his first-ever Sprint Cup Series championship. It was the first title in NASCAR's top series for manufacturer Toyota, who entered the series in 2007. It is the fourth championship for team owner Joe Gibbs (2000, 2002, 2005) and the second for Gibbs' #18 car after Bobby Labonte's 2000 championship in the #18 Interstate Batteries machine. Busch got the lead on a late restart after a battle during a long green flag run between Brad Keselowski (#2) and Kyle Larson (#42).

Erik Jones, the driver of Kyle Busch's #4 Toyota and the points leader after the Phoenix shakeup, finished the race in the sixth position, about eighteen seconds behind Crafton, and clinched the series championship. The 19-year-old will drive for Kyle Busch's Cup car owner Joe Gibbs full-time in the Xfinity Series in 2016. Here is a list in detail of NASCAR drivers who have driven vehicles numbered 97.

Sprint Cup

Chad Little: 1994-2000
In 1994, Little started driving a Winston Cup Pontiac owned by Greg Pollex. It had a famous green and yellow John Deere Tractor paint scheme. For the 1998 season, Pollex sold his team to Jack Roush, who made the #97 car a Ford Taurus. Little became teammates with veteran Mark Martin, among others.

Kurt Busch: 2001-2005
Little was released before the 2000 season was over. Truck driver Kurt Busch replaced him in late September, John Deere pulled its sponsorship at year's end and the #97 ran unsponroed for the first few races of 2001. Rubbermaid/Sharpie signed on that April. Busch finished second in the 2001 rookie standings to Kevin Harvifck. The Roush #97 Ford featured several designs over the next few years. Busch won the Nextel Cup championship in 2004. 2005 would be his last year with the then-five-car organization, as he ended his contract early to replace Rusty Wallace at Team Penske. The #97 Taurus became the #26 Fusion in 2006.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. wins rain-shortened Phoenix Cup race; Logano eliminated from Chase

Dale Earnhardt Jr. stole the win in Sunday's Sprint Cup Eliminator round finale at Phoenix International Raceway in a rain-delayed affair, during which Kevin Harvick led the majority of the 220 of 312 laps completed. During green-flag pit stops, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Joey Gase crashed to bring out a caution. Dale Jr. cycled to the lead after Jeff Gordon pitted, with Harvick second and Chase bubble driver Joey Logano third. Yet another rain shower came during the cleanup and the track was lost, sending the drivers to pit road for good. Logano, his teammate Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards were eliminated from championship contention.

98 days until the Daytona 500

Here is a list in detail of drivers who have driven a number 98 vehicle in all of NASCAR's major series.

Sprint Cup

Marvin Panch: 1970-1975

Derrike Cope: 1993-94
Cope drove the #10 Chevrolet for Bob Whitcomb to two wins in 1990, including the Daytona 500. He left after the 1992 season to drive for Cale Yarborough, with sponsorship from Bojangles and SuperCuts. Cope was replaced by rookie Jeremy Mayfield in the middle of 1994, moving to Bobby Allison's #12 team.
Jeremy Mayfield: 1994-95
Mayfield spent the second half of his rookie year and his entire sophomore season as Yarborough's driver before going to the #37 Kranefuss Racing Ford.

John Andretti: 1996-97
Andretti, previously an open-wheeler and who had swapped rides with Mayfield in 1996, got his first of two Cup wins in the 1997 Pepsi 400 at Daytona driving the #98 RCA-sponsored Ford, beating some of NASCAR's bigger names. The Yarborough team shut down at season's end and Andretti found a new ride driving for Richard Petty in the #43 Pontiac.
Paul Menard: 2009-10
The son of entrepreneur and IndyCar team owner John Menard, Paul previously drove for Andy Petree and Dale Earnhardt Incorporated. He piloted the neon #98 machine for Robert Yates in 2009, then for Richard Petty in 2010, both times as a Ford. He left for Richard Childress Racing in 2011, spawning the #27 Menards Chevrolet. Paul drove a copy of the car in the Nationwide Series.

 Michael McDowell: 2012-13
McDowell drove for Phil Parsons, son of the late Cup champion Benny.
 Josh Wise: 2014-15
Wise occasionally drove the Reddit-coined Dogecar, sponsored by cryptocurrency Dogecoin, and became a fan favorite thanks to usage of the Doge internet meme.

Timmy Hill, Reed Sorenson, T.J. Bell: 2015
The #98 team was sold to Premium Motorsports in the summer; Wise left shortly afterward. Hill and Sorenson have switched between the #98 and the #62 Premium entry, alternating between Ford and Chevrolet, since then on a part-time basis. Bell drove it at the Watkins Glen road course.

Xfinity Series

Aric Almirola, David Ragan, Ryan Truex, Sam Hornish Jr.: 2014-present
The #98 Biagi-DenBeste Racing Ford Mustang in the Xfinity Series is aligned with Ford Cup team Richard Petty Motorsports, explaining Almirola and Hornish's part-time status with the team.

Truck Series

Erin Crocker: 2005-06
Crocker drove for the Dodge team of Ray Evernham, who she married in 2006.
Johnny Sauter: 2013-present
Originally joining Toyota team ThorSport Racing in 2009 to drive the #13 truck, Sauter moved to the #98 truck in 2013 to make room for Jeb Burton.

99 days until the Daytona 500

Here is a list in detail of drivers who have driven a number 99 vehicle in all of NASCAR's major series.

Sprint Cup

Charlie Glotzbach: 1970

This winged Dodge was driven to two Grand National wins.

Jeff Burton: 1996-2004

"The Mayor" drove for Jack Roush for eight and a half seasons, driving a Ford Thunderbird, then a Taurus, and winning 17 races. His main sponsor was Exide from 1996-2000, then Citgo from 2001-2003. By 2004 the Roush #99 team had no permanent sponsor and Burton was released from his contract in August. Dismayed, Burton left Roush to join Richard Childress Racing, thus becoming a Chevrolet driver.

Carl Edwards: 2004-2014

Burton's replacement was "Cousin" Carl Edwards, best known as that backflip guy. Carl, who would likely have been the 2005 Nextel Cup Rookie of the Year had he not competed in more than the maximum seven races in '04, performed his first Cup backflip in March of that year at Atlanta after a photo finish with Jimmie Johnson. The Ford Fusion body was introduced in 2006, the Car of Tomorrow in 2007, the COT-V2 in 2010 and the Gen-6 in 2013. Carl stayed with Roush through it all, taking a total of 23 checkered flags before finally leaving to drive a fourth Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs following the 2014 season.

Xfinity Series

Michael Waltrip: 2001-2009

Darrell's little brother drove a #99 machine for his own team in NASCAR's number two series for the better part of the decade, as a Chevrolet and then a Toyota.

David Reutimann: 2005-2009

Reutimann drove Waltrip's then-Busch Series car to a win at Memphis in 2007.

Trevor Bayne: 2009-2010

Alex Bowman: 2012-2013

James Buescher: 2014
